Nelda Swiggett Quintet: Alaska Suite at The Seasons Performance Hall

Location: Yakima , Downtown Yakima

101 N Naches Ave, Yakima, WA 98901

Seattle-based, award-winning composer Nelda Swiggett brings her five-piece chamber jazz ensemble to The Seasons for a special performance of her original work, “The Alaska Suite: a story of beauty, loss and hope” – a musical reverie on the tenuous beauty of the Arctic. But this is not just a concert. The performance engages the power of artistic expression — live music, spoken words, images and poetry — to connect audiences deeply and emotionally to the scientific realities of climate change. The Alaska Suite debuted in 2017, and has since inspired over 1600 people with its message of hope and call to action. Featuring Nelda Swiggett (compositions, piano, narrative), Julian Smedley (violin), Clif Swiggett (trombone), Chris Symer (bass), Adam Kessler (drums), and the poetry of Jill McGrath.

About the Benefit

Please Note: There will be a Silent Auction to benefit the Powerhouse Road Pathway project in The Seasons Lobby before the Concert. It will feature Wilridge Wines donated by local vintner, Paul Beveridge.

All proceeds from ticket sales & auction will be used to support the conceptual design of the West Powerhouse Road Pathway – currently a missing link in Yakima’s bike/pedestrian trail system — in memory of Wendy Baker.

The proposed pathway will connect the Greenway and Naches trails at 40th and Fruitvale to the Cowiche Canyon Trail. This project would significantly improve public safety for walking, biking, and rolling on a street with a lot of bicycle traffic and a history of serious bike-motor vehicle accidents.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) recently completed a corridor study that supports bicycle safety improvements along West Powerhouse Road. A grant application to complete the Phase 1 off-road trail around the Fred Meyer complex has beensubmitted to WSDOT’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Program. Concert proceeds will help the William O. Douglas Trail Foundation develop engineering right-of-way plans for Phase 2 to extend this multi-use trail northwesterly to Cowiche Canyon.
